Aonomine-san lies between Toba City and Shima City. At
336 meters high, it is the highest mountain in the Shima Peninsula.
The sea routes off Daioh-zaki, adjacent to the Shima Penunsula, are
tumultuous and many boats have been lost or wrecked. From the sea, Aonomine-san
is visible and distinctive, and seafarers navigating this sea route
used to pray to lofty Aomine-san for their safe passage. On top of Aonomine-san
stands a temple called Shofuku-ji, which enshrines "the goddess
having twelve faces." She is a guardian not only for local fishermen
and women divers but also for seafarers nationwide.
The top of Aonomine-san is surrounded by thick trees and
this prevents a clear view from the peak, but the mountain vista from
the parking site is very nice. There are two routes to the top. One
is the new road climbing up from Matsuo and down to Isobe, well paved
and easily accessible by car. The other route is an old trail climbing
from Matsuo and down to Kutsukake.
