| Miya River starts from the mountain terrain of Odai at the boundary
of Mie and Nara prefectures where Mt Hinode-ga-take (1695 m) lies, and
several branch rivers such as Ohuchiyama, Ichinose and Yokowa flow into
the Miya running northeast to Ise Bay. It ends at Ohminato in Ise, 91
km downstream. Miya River was also called Watarai-gawa or Toyomiya -gawa
in the past. Since Miya River runs near the sacred territory of Grand Shrine of Ise, pilgrims used this stream as a holy river to purify themselves. The pilgrim route called Sangu Kaido crossed the Miya River at two locations: up river at a site called Yanagi-no -watashi was a ferry terminal from Yamato and Kisyu areas and then at a down river site called Sakura-no-watashi another ferry terminal from Kyoto and eastern part of districts in Japan. In 1989 the Ministry of Construction performed a water survey and placed Miya River among the first class of the nation's big rivers for water quality. |
